Wilderness Wednesday - Finding Colour in Nature

Today during Wilderness Wednesday we looked for colours in nature.  At first we weren't sure we were up to the challenge, but we quickly realized that nature is filled with colour.  Here are some of the colours we found in nature.

Next time you're in nature be sure to look around to see what colours you can find in nature.

Patterns, Patterns, Patterns

Our Math focus for the first few weeks of school was on patterning.  Each grade level had different expectations to meet in order to show that they understood some principles around patterns.  As you were aware we also looked for and explored patterns in nature.  Below are a few photos of some of the different ways we were learning about patterns.  You will notice that there are some simple repeating pattern activities, growing patterns, shrinking patterns, growing and shrinking patterns, number patterns etc. In a multi-aged classroom, it is important that each child understand their expected learning intention, yet have an opportunity to work side by side with those on their own learning journey.  We all have arrived together into our class exactly as we should, and together we are helping each other become the best learners (in this case patterning experts) that we can be.

We Have Wonders!

This afternoon we went outside to check out our monster made from artifacts from nature.  While we were looking at our monsters this animal flew by and landed on our window.  Boy did we have a lot of questions...

Here are some of our many questions

Where did this dragon fly come from?
Does it have eye balls?
Why are its eyes so big?
How many little eyes does it have?
How big is the dragon fly?
Why does it have a long tail?
Why does the dragon fly have wings?
Does it have a mouth?
Why does it have blue stripes?
Why does it have big wings?
Why does it have clear wings?
Why does it have long wings?
Why does it have four wings?
Why does it have stripes?
Why are there so many arms?

Are they arms or are they legs?
Is it a girl or a boy or both?
How do they eat?
What do they eat?
How do they fly?
Is it an adult or is it a child?
Does it hibernate?
Why do the wings make a chirping sound?
How old is it?
Where does it live?
Where does it sleep?
Does it have a family?
Is it a mom or a dad?
If it has babies, how many babies does it have?
Why did it stay when we got close to it?
Why it come to visit us?
Is it friendly?
Is it poisonous?
Is it homeless?
Where does it sleep at night?
Does it sleep at night?

It's Almost Time...

Our class blog is just about ready to be up and running for the 2017-2018 school  year.  In case you're wondering this year we are Division 17.  Right now the children in our class range in age from 4 (and a half) to 8 and we are in kindergarten to grade three.  But really we are just a group of really fantastic children ( according to our teacher and she knows best) learning with and from one another.  We are excited to see where our year of learning together will take us and we hope you'll join along too.  If you're looking for more information from us check out our class twitter feed at @MsLsClass.  You can find many of our tweets just to the right of these blog posts.  Also our student blogs will be coming soon too and there you can see some of the work we are creating in class.  We love sharing with a global audience so please do come check out our learning.  In the mean time, thank you for your patience.  School start up always takes longer than we want it to but don't worry Ms. Lirenman has been busy taking our photos doing some of the things we've been doing.  Soon you'll get to see these photos too! We can't wait for that day to come.  Just be patient... it is coming!

A Perfect Day at the Beach

Today we traveled by school bus to Crescent Beach to enjoy a SAIL day at the beach.  We couldn't have been luckier with the weather either because it was sunny and warm but there was a nice cool breeze so we never got too hot.  Since we travel from all over the lower mainland to attend SAIL some of us just came with our parents to the beach.   It was such a great day that a bunch of us forgot to eat lunch!  Here are some photos of the day.  As you can see we had a really great day.
